In December 2021, after 16 long years, Angela Merkel stepped down as German Chancellor, making way for only the fourth socialist leader in the country’s post-war history to take over the Chancellery. Olaf Scholz was elected as the new chancellor. The new government is made up of both the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), as well as his own Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is called a traffic light coalition named after the colours of each party.
The German Foreign Ministry is headed by Annalena Berbock from the "Greens", known for her harsh criticism of Lukashenka and Putin. What meaning will Belarus have for the new government of Germany? Will Berlin act tougher in relation to official Minsk and the Kremlin and support ordinary Belarusians more? These and other questions will be discussed at the expert webinar jointly convened by the Research Centre of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya Office (OST Research Centre) and the Oxford Belarus Observatory (OBO), with the support of the GCRF COMPASS project.
